Beyond the Wall Istaril Darknoj Thesaurusrex John G. Montreal Tournament Report Across the Seven Kingdoms
It's pre-gencon! Well, post-regional season. A fair bit of news from the last two weeks, follow up by a tournament report from the Montreal Regional, which Darknoj and Thesaurus Rex both attended, only to be defeated by this week's guest, John G. Yes, that's a John, a Jon and a Sean on the cast. Our guest sticks around to review the new chapter pack, Across the Seven

Alt art draft cards would be great. Even better, if they have the same layout as the normal one (I prefer the regular layout than the full-bleed versions' design).
I will be missing melee as the championship format, but the draft looks interesting, especially if its cards are compatible with the "basic" game (not like in 1.0).
Yes to full bleeds <3
I'm actually surprised to say that I feel bad for the people who really enjoy melee. As a person who didn't care for 1.0 melee in slightest, but has come to appreciate the 2.0 version on a very casual level, I find it crazy that they are dropping it as a "main format" from competitive play, just as I am seeing a lot of formerly disinterested players just begin to warm up to it. What a bummer.
However, I am a huge fan of competitive drafting, even if I don't particularly love FFG's version.
Count me in on the full bleeds or alt arts (or both) for the draft packs, though. Anything to make them special, and thus make me less grouchy about buying cards I already own, is a good move.
Quick question for those that are PRO competitive melee:
Do you think the winner should have the ability to design their own card as a reward?
Do you think the results from both Joust and Melee should be used to determine an Overall winner?
Despite my overall win, I'm not a huge fan of the overall title. I think that while joust and melee skills do overlap, it's not enough to consider them two aspects of the same thing. Furthermore, the existence of the overall title did incentivize people to play formats they disliked to get points, which I don't think is healthy for either of the formats.
The overall title could exist as a "he or she is good at many aspects of the game", but I don't think it should specifically be incentivized with the 'sole card design of the tournament' as it has been at Gencon in the past. I think there's no doubt that some of the players who have/would have earned this - or come close - were exceptional at several aspects of the game (Seth, Ryan, for example) - and I don't think there's anything wrong with recognizing that.
As for card designs in general, I actually think the "continentals+worlds" model isn't ideal - it's not necessarily even-handed with areas that don't have continentals, and they have enough backlog of cards as it is. Personally, I'd favour a Worlds-only model, at least until the backlog is cleared, and there I'd be willing to concede that there could be champion cards for joust, melee, and even draft - although if we're acknowledging that each is a separate skill, than each should be usable only within the format from which it was won.
