Beyond the Wall, Season 3 Episode 22

Beyond the Wall Istaril Darknoj ThesaurusRex Lauren R Podcast AGOT

It's the week where Sean officially becomes part of the cast. No, I still haven't adjusted the intro to match. Darknoj and Istaril chat about the last two week's news & tournaments. We're then joined by Thesaurusrex and Lauren R for a brief chat about mentoring new players, followed by the meat of the episode: Lauren telling us how people play events wrong. It winds up being quite an interesting way to explore some aspects of the meta-game! We sound off with some closing comments.

Lauren, you should try out our style of play!

Good cast, the sean experiment seems like a success.

Seth, I've heard the DC deck-building style summarized like this many times now. Is this essentially accurate? Is it safe to say you don't run Hands Judgment, or is that too simplistic a way to look at it?
Less accurate now. We were very critical of playing silver bullet, specific "answer" cards in first ed. But the meta in 2.0 is less complicated thus far and there seems to be more value in defensive/reactive cards within limits. So I don't think we've fully carried that identity over.

I think everyone who plays this game on any kind of serious basis has had that same Hand's Judgment debate. Do I include it? What if they don't have any events or what if they use the one event I care about cancelling when I don't have any gold? But then, what if they kill my best character? And what do I take out for it?

In my personal experience, the only events that I am concerned with on a regular basis are Treachery and Nightmares. Since I run Aemon, I'm not super concerned with Put to the Sword and, while I can occasionally fall for the "use Aemon for military claim and then lose an intrigue challenge and get Tears'd" trap, it doesn't happen often enough to justify 2 slots in my deck.

So the question I have to ask myself is are those 2 slots worth the Nightmares and Treachery plays.

It didn't used to, but now I'm noticing that Nightmares is, essentially, everywhere. So it's become a decision for me again.

The other problem is, as my deck is built now, 2 slots may as well be 100 slots. It can be so hard to find room in your deck, especially in a fealty deck.

In NW Mirror, which you are potentially interested in - Nigthmares is the silver bullet. One thing is to put Wall before opponent, second is to stop his Wall at least one. Same goes for canceling cancel (Watcher on the Wall or Sword in Darkness) it is not only defensive card.
