In this week's episode, Istaril and Darknoj do an overview of some recent news. Then, with returning guest Steven S, we kick off our 6-part series featuring a house and where it stands in the new meta. This centers around Steven, Istaril and Darknoj each building a first draft of a Stark deck to test with or against in your tournament preparations. Finally, in our "Town Crier" segment, Scantrell tells us about some new additions to the "New Player's Thread" and Tomdidiot gives us details about the upcoming London Regional.

Canada is getting a National??!! That's awesome for you guys!

You might get more US players than Canadian!
Bomb: that's the rumour...but who knows what the truth will be.
While I generally find your episodes to be great I thought this one was outstandingly excellent and I can't wait for the next 5. Do you have an idea of in what order you will go through the houses?

For Simoni's deck I like At the Palace of Sorrows to bounce Theon in a pinch, or to bounce any Stark character so Meera can return to shadows.

Not to be that guy, but your example on Preston coming out and getting Flame Kissed isn't possible since he is no attachments. Granted Targ has plenty of other options to target him.
Very true awritt. Flame kissed was just the first burn that jumped into my head but your are correct that it would not work. Targ will just have to use one of its other burn options. ;)

First of all, thanks for the high praise! We do have a bit of an outline, because we have to line up guests in advance, but we really can't set anything in stone as we haven't heard from all of our planned guests.
Fantastic episode as always. You guys are doing great work.

I'm interested in hearing why everyone included Northland Keep. I've seen some people using Borderland Keep, but rarely Northland. Can you explain what you've been seeing in the meta that makes Northland a good choice
Northland is a real stitch in the side of Maiden's Bane, Wildlings, Cavalry Flanks, and a great many Greyjoy characters, as well as voltrons (Chained-up maesters, TRV with Taste for Blood, Beric), some star rush characters with strength boosting attachments from the Bara-Lanni conquest, and everything in a Tunnels deck. Primarily, in my deck it serves to guarantee I can push through the military challenge I need to get off the event-based targetted kill, and making my plentiful deadly/stealth deadly just that little bit better. As more people are forced to tech against HoD Dragonpit, which I think is the deck to beat int he meta, they're forced to use characters Northland Keep affects.

On the other hand, it's not all that great against most of Martell and Targ right now, so it may wind up being a meta-call that gets cut with tweaking, but with the refugees (and spearmen) it's at least rarely a dead card. I think part of it is the new/shiny factor - I've only played against it (not with it), and it's made me re-evaluate challenge math in a way I'm not used to. I figure if I can put that kind of pressure on my opponent, he will slip up.

Alex said it all ;)
Makes sense, thank you. I was just surprised that all three of you included two copies. It's not something I have considered before. If you find this card productive, do youever find room for any other similar tech, or are these plenty?

I appreciated this cast a lot. Thank you.
I like the white harbour dromon and the winterfell practice yard for screwing up challenge maths and pushing challanges through. And on top of that, you get reknown! Yet these cards seldom sees play. What am I missing?
Nothing much bolomolo - the Dromon is great (although doesn't interact all that nicely with non-kneelers). The catch for both, though, is that they're 2 cost locations, which makes them a much larger investment for not putting a character on the board.

1 cost in general is useful to smoothen out a cost curve and favour better setups. This is especially true in a deck running winter and KoW, that wants to reliably have fewer cards in hand than its opponent.

The Dromon is good enough to warrant a place in some decks, but 2 cost locations that make it into many are few and far between (Longship Iron Victory, Meraxes, Great Pyramid, Golden Tooth Mines, The Scourge).
Just to echo many - this was an excellent cast. What a great idea having three different decks created by three different people and to have them discussed and evaluated.

One thing I would love to hear (though there may not be time) is a little debate on what each of you believes should change in another person's build and why. You did ask for people to defend their choices, but it would be great to hear a little different take from each of you as to what you might think should be a little different in the build someone else put together. It might help listeners who might have a slightly different playstyle than the person who initially built the deck.

Just a thought - not a critique. I absolutely loved this cast.

Thanks. I got confused by the borderland keep, which I fail to see the strength of, since it´s one use only.
Borderlands Keep is phenomenal in siege - especially in a meta with a lot of Burning/Red Vengeance or event based challenge-control, since Siege can't afford to lose a military challenge. In other decks, it's more situational, but it still has its place, despite being a 1-shot location. Derek S.'s worlds 2012 deck was a Stark KoTR, and he felt justified in including them...
Need more info on Canadian Nationals.
Where is this rumour coming from and if it is a possibility when? Need to set up vacations and childcare and what not if a 13 hour drive is gonna happen
Currently there's no real information, just rumors. They're exciting enough (and plausible enough) to justify dissemination, but we'll be sure to let people know on the podcast as soon as we hear anything else!
On the note of Northland Keep and LMB. Would Reek take control of it as it's a character if it was in the challenge? This would be hilarious if it happened and would you keep control of it after it turned back into a location?

Northland Keep is money. I think originally I believe it was underrated(still may be) but it's great for some form of challenge control. It works good in tandem with Frozen Outpost to push through offense.

Currently working on a Martell no agenda with Quentyn and it's great to have decks to test against. Like having 3 variations of Stark to test against that I didn't build since most of my "play testing" is vs myself until I've tweaked it enough.

*edit* Btw, really digging the podcast you and darknoj have put together. Keep it up and can't wait to hear the other House podcasts.

You've made me consider Northland Keep for my own Stark decks. This was a card I had not been considering, but it must be worth another look since it's good against GJ and Tunnels. You also cannot forget the mirror match either with Stark having quite a few higher STR than cost characters too.
Benny Hill theme? BRILLIANT!!!
Another great episode.
For those that wanted to know the schedule Lannister will be next followed by Martell followed by Targ.
