Beyond the Wall, Season 2 Episode 20

Beyond the Wall Istaril Darknoj Thesaurusrex Jakob W. livingend Jcwamma Regionals Stark Agendas

We start off with the usual news roundup and address some new listener comments. We then give you two interviews with regional champions: Jakob W., who brought Targaryen KotHH back into the stats for the season, and Sean E. (thesaurusrex), the Ottawa champion who thinks Wildfire is a good card. And may be right. Istaril follows it up by inviting Florian M. (livingend) and James W. (jcwamma) on to talk about the new Stark 2.0 information, and then, thanks to our exclusive 2.0 spoiler, jump into the topic of Agendas. We close it all off by inviting you all to the big tournements this weekend - especially Montreal!

I think that the negative talk on the Agenda spoiler is a bit 1.0 minded. Seems like it might be an assumption that FFG actually want No Agenda to be a thing. This sort of thing tells me that Agendas are encouraged. At the moment it also looks like in the Core there is not much incentive to not run one of the Banner Agendas. Fealty looks like a really strong encouragement that you can still be competitive playing a mono-faction deck. So rather than creating incentives to run No Agenda, they are at least giving good alternatives out of the box.

Thanks for the mention on the cast guys! I was glad I made the 5 hour drive to Ottawa. As mentioned on the cast, I recorded some matches while at the tournament. Here is the first round match.

I will be posting the rest later today and through out the week. Thanks again to the awesome Montreal and Ottawa metas for being so welcoming and letting me record them playing! See you next weekend at the Montreal regional!

I really enjoyed the discussion of the agenda. Y'all did a great job presenting an even case for/against, but it will probably take a year or more before we have a grasp of how FFG wants to handle agendas. I'm a bit concerned that faction-mixing is ONLY allowed via the banner agendas. What happens if the banners are eventually outclassed?

then we will stop seeing things like dany in pbtt....which is a nice thing.

Spoiler image is now up. Something I only noticed just now is the card-number, 27. Does that mean we're only getting 26 plots?

More likely is that they're doubling up on certain plots they think are necessary in order to get enough for 4 players... any guesses as to which?

Looks that way.  Even more fuel to the "no Valar" theory.

I tried the Wildfire Assault method for having Quentyn go off.

First game I played, my opponent used Nightmares on Quentyn pre-plot.

Doh!

We know of a card already that kneels your faction card - The Things I do for love in the Lanni spoiler article. Any deck wanting this (and as long as you have lord or ladies in the deck I'd say its a very useful event) will not get the best use out of Fealty.

Well, to be fair, we hadn't seen the article yet at the time we recorded - but yes, I was very glad to see it appear in the article!

What are the chances that decks will be able to take two Agendas: one Banner and one other? It seems odd at first, but as Scantrell points out, dual-faction is tied to Banners. Without that, there could be no dual-faction decks of any other Agenda.

In fact: are the Banners Agendas? Or a new card-type: Banner?

Ignore that list bit. They are referred to as "banner agendas" by Nate in one of the preview articles.

Here are the featured matches from rounds 2 and 3 from the Ottawa regional mentioned on the cast. More to come.

Great episode guys! Thanks for mentioning the OCTGN league even though I forgot to ask you to :)

Great episode. My friends and I played 1.0 for a while and then slowly stopped. We never did any tourneys though. We are really encouraged by 2.0 and will get back into the game. So I know I am one of your "viewers" that is more interested in the new edition news. But i try to stay current enough to follow the 1.0 talk. Quick question: what was the original card that FFG was going to give you as a spoiler? As for duplicate plots, I think Wildfire will be one of them.

Shots fired at DWDW!

Really wonderful episode. Strong segments all around.

(PS. I agree with Sean, Wildfire Assault is a very good way to turn Q into an agenda.)

Ice (most of the card had been deciphered, although we still dont have everything about it). Still, I am glad I asked for something else, as I hope you will agree that the Agenda made for a pretty neat segment!

Wildfire definitely seems like a candidate for 2x. Here is hoping the other, if there is one, is not a limit 1 per plot deck plot... that would be pretty poor planning.

If any other kind of reset is included (worst case Marched to the Wall is a bit of one) I'd like it to be that. That way all 4 melee players at least get something.

Hi guys:

In Ep.20, you asked for some feedback on the level of technical information and jargon being provided in your podcast.  It is pretty clear that your assumed audience is a high-level tournament player.  This isn't specific to you guys; I subscribe to several podcasts that cover LCGs, and this appears to be the default assumption across the board.  The result is that there simply is no on-ramp for a casual player--anywhere

I would love to find a podcast that provides that on-ramp.  It would be a big step forward to add a segment that is specifically geared to casual players.  Each week, you could talk about a basic LCG concept, and how it is applied in AGoT.  Then you could look at how that concept affects deckbuilding, with LOTS of examples.  Finally, this could be followed up with examples of how these combinations could turn out in play.  Obviously, putting this in the front half would allow the casual players to tune out afterward, and you could give the run time in the show notes to enable skipping it, for anyone who wants to do so.

I don't think a segment like this would turn off the majority of advanced players.  The type of player who already obsesses over this stuff will get something out of it too, even if it's only disagreeing/debating with your advice.

Finally, on jargon:  keep in mind that if you guys don't explain what your jargon means, it likely isn't explained anywhere.

Scott

Hello Scott! We actually had some other new listeners give us the very same (vein of) feedback this week, and it's definitely something we're looking into.

I think one of the inherent issues is that, at some point or another, we've tried to do exactly that; we've had an episode on the lexicon, on the basic maths of setup, the fundamentals of card advantage, the creation of a new meta, how to play online, helping a new player build a deck, etc - but eventually we run out of basic topics. Given that there's not a huge reason for new listeners (especially ones primarily interested in 2.0) to go listen to the entirety of our back-catalogue, it puts us in a bit of a tricky position of either regularly repeating ourselves, or omitting the basic stuff entirely...

In the end, I'm not yet certain what to do. It may be that, while we should definitely re-introduce many of these concepts after the launch of 2.0, in the meantime we should try and create a written (rather than audio) reference to the terms, concepts, etc - and point people to Scantrell's excellent new player thread.

I would definitely recommend at least checking out the lexicon episode, and see if that helps you out (also, check out the comments in the related article - people pointed out some terms we missed entirely)

As someone who intends to jump into Throne 2.0 I'm looking forward to meeting the community next Saturday at the Montréal regional - I'll be there for the Star Wars regional that will take place at the same time.

As someone who started playing right around when this podcast started, I can definitely vouch for those early episodes as a great introduction into more competitive play.  Alex and Jon were a huge resource for me, and made me a much better player more quickly than I would have been on my own -- not that I'm a world-beater or anything.
