Insight and Renown Episode 03 - April Fool's!

In honour of April Fool's day, on today's episode of Insight and Renown we take a look at some of the wackiest, the zaniest, and the head-scratchingest cards FFG has ever printed!

In the 2nd Edition of the Game of Thrones Living Card Game, we're in a unique position - thousands of card have come before us, but only a few are available for play right now. As new cards come out, what are the chances that we'll see some old abilities and mechanics revisited? The Insight and Renown podcast posits that it's pretty damn near 100%. Although in the case of the cards discussed in this episode - maybe that's not the best idea.

As a 12+ year veteran of this game, I've seen a lot of cards come and go, and thought it might be interesting to take a look at the history of this game, and see what cards and themes we might see again in the near future. Every episode will highlight one theme or mechanic in 2nd Edition, and look at some of the cards from the CCG era and 1st Edition that might be reprinted, or at least serve as inspiration for a new card.

Interesting! Without spoiling your lists, I thought the historic version of HoD Gates of Winterfell was really neat, and it seems like the Wolves version of Jory Cassel has many of the same interactions as the GJ character you mention. Common Cause could get pretty spectacular too...

That's a good point about the new Jory - it plays out the same in 2nd edition, doesn't it? I'm calling it now: that's gonna cause some very annoyed threads in the Facebook group!

I'd wanted to include Common Cause (and its CCG precursor, Against the Common Foe), but I was running a little long. They were always a few cards short of being viable, unfortunately - the plots were the only good reason to run a multifaction deck, although they were almost good enough by themselves to make it worthwhile.

For what it's worth, I miss the old 5KE agendas. Had a lot of good times with those. And Jeppedo's old Brothers at War Stark deck is one of my favorites ever in the game.

Fair enough! I actually piloted a Kings of the North traitor deck myself at 2008 Canadian Nationals, beating a Brothers at War deck in the finals. We'd played the match many times so both decks were optimized against each other (for example, my opponent played Expendable Ally and WED Cersei out of house, simply because they were the only cards that could cancel the traitor's passive character ability). Our meta lost a pretty significant chunk of players that were sick of 5KE so I might be over-representing the player base's feelings.

Fun episode.

I really miss my Doomed Longshipsman.

The Things I Do For Love was from the Iron Throne Edition though and not 5KE so it was legal for a long time.

Alex, super fun episode. Live the series. I'm interested in an episode about economy. I'm second edition gold is at a premium and in the ccg / 1ed, the amount of non-limited economy was just insane You could talk about cost efficiency and avg gold on plots. Just might be something fun. Like how King's Hall was the predecessor for The Kingsroad and stuff like that.

Thanks for the compliment, and good call! Might not be the next episode but there's a lot to talk about there!
