Metaphysics - Going Rogue

Rogue decks are traditionally defined as decks played against the grain of the metagame. These are decks that come straight out of left field to level the competition by playing unexpected cards or strategies that most of the popular decks are not prepared to face. In theory, the more players prepare to face the 3 or 4 top decks, the less they are prepared to face anything else.

It was a toss up this week between Targ burn and Martell Maesters. Our very own cardgamedb author Imrahil327 took down Fresno with what I think is the best deck in the current meta. I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to plumb the depths of this world beater.

The Grand Melee - Playing Control in Melee Part...

A Control deck is a deck that aims to lock-down your opponent’s options. This can be done by kneeling his characters, disrupting his gold flow, destroying his hand, etc. There are many control deck that do well in Joust and I’m sure you have already encountered one. The classic rock-paper-scissors metagame view states that control loses to aggro decks, but beats combo decks. This is somewhat skewed by the fact that most decks are typically a blend of deck types. But according to this view, playing control in Melee doesn’t seem like a good choice; let’s have a look at why.

Forging the Chain - Being Competitive in Your Meta

Welcome back to another installment of Forging the Chain. This week I'm going to discuss a topic which is critical for newer players, fielding competitive decks for your meta. Depending on the group of players you play with, this can be accomplished in different ways. If you are playing with a few friends and you each have a core set and one house box, go ahead and build the best deck you can from that limited pool. I've taken this approach with a number of games and it has been quite fun. However, after a while the limited aspect of the game became rather boring and we moved on to other games. If you are playing with a group whose goal is to play the best decks you can and improve your skills, you are going to need access to all of the cards, and that's what the remainder of this column will focus on.

So fellows... As you may know, Regionals season has just turned the corner. That said, it's time to put your Clansman or Brotherhood deck away and bust out the best tournament decks you can think of. For Lannister, a good choice for this season would be a deck that uses the Power Behind the Throne agenda. So lets look at the potential this agenda has and any drawbacks you might encounter.

Beheading Ned - The Brotherhood Without Banners

This week I am going to stray from my usual deck building and look at a particular chapter pack cycle; the Brotherhood Without Banners. This cycle resonates with me, as it was the first cycle to hit the shelves when I began playing, and is a great place to start for new players offering a tribal deck for each house built around a particular trait that you can use to accompany the Core Set. It also has a ton of thematic material to work with. I will be looking at the Baratheon, Stark, Lannister, and Neutral house-specific traits developed over the cycle and what I consider the best, or funnest, cards within them.
