Fire and Blood - Reviving the Embers

May 22 2013 06:10 PM | OKTarg in Game of Thrones

Is it just me or has it really been over a month since I wrote one of these articles for myself? I've enjoyed hearing from my fellow legions of Targaryen bannermen, but this week the task falls once more on my shoulders to take a look around all things Targ and try to add some insight or comment into what is going on in the game currently. One thing I've noticed is the huge shifts in the meta, brought on largely by the new agendas and the FAQ. Summer is Coming's recent episode 20 and some of the Forum threads currently percolating are discussing a few trends, so I thought that I'd see how Targaryen fits within these new grooves carved by the current state of the game. Then, for each meta shift, I'll suggest some of my "secret tech" that I'm experimenting with to help leverage our house's advantages.

All Things Shagga - Dreaming at the Inn

May 22 2013 05:05 AM | Kennon in Game of Thrones

Hello again, fellow clansmen! This week your resident Shagga is exploring one of the more Shagga friendly agendas in the game- House of Dreams. As well, I mentioned last time that we’d soon get the chance to look at a deck using the new event, Sitting the Iron Throne. So here’s our first deck that features that sweet intersection between the two. Props go out to fellow CGDBer, Tiny Grimes, as the genesis of this deck spawned from a conversation with him via Skype a few days ago.

Greek Game of Thrones Nationals Report

May 20 2013 02:20 AM | Greekguy in Game of Thrones

"The night is dark and full of terrors..."

That's what I was thinking taking the stairs down to the great hall of Hotel Stratos Vassilikos leading me to the final table of the Regional held in Athens, Greece. Last year I was at the final table again but lost. This year was going to be different... But let's take this from the start.

Scheming on the Sands - Martell Aggro

May 17 2013 07:00 PM | mnBroncos in Game of Thrones

"Daemon, my spear!" Ser Daemon tossed it to him, and the Red Viper snatched it from the air.

When building a Martell deck, or when you sit across from a Martell deck, most of the time I am expecting a heavy control style deck, after all Martell can play control better than most right? If you played Martell before the latest FAQ that was most certainly the case, but now with all these very quick rush/aggro decks that are on the rise what are Martell players to do? Well like the old saying goes, if you can't beat them join them.

Quill & Tankard Regulars - Issue 24

May 17 2013 05:10 AM | CardGameDB in Game of Thrones

With trembling hands the young student opened the leather folder in front of him. His memory of the previous night was but a blur. It all started at the Quill & Tankard, and he remembered some of the regulars there promising to "help" him out, in exchange for beer. A copious amount of beer, now that he thought of it. And that's as far as his memory lasted.

Opening the folder he found three badly stained papers scribbled with small, but oddly fluent handwriting. That clearly, was not his own. From here, there was only one thing to do. Mumbling a prayer to the seven under his breathe he handed the papers to the Archmaesters one by one.

Beheading Ned - King of Storm's End

May 16 2013 05:00 AM | mnBroncos in Game of Thrones

"The Iron Throne is mine by rights. All those who deny that are my foes." – Stannis Baratheon
"The whole of the realm denies it, brother. Old men deny it with their death rattle, and unborn children deny it in their mothers' wombs. They deny it in Dorne and they deny it on the Wall. No one wants you for their king. Sorry." – Renly Baratheon

Welcome back to Beheading Ned and an article that looks at the king first defeated in the war of the five kings, Renly Baratheon. Although he was the first eliminated he had the strongest army and to match this lets take an attempt to build a deck that can match his armies strength.

Today we're continuing with the more Learned side of the Storm Bannermen, picking up where we left last week. We'll be dissecting some specific specimens in order to figure out what really makes them tick. Does everyone have their scalpels ready? Enough candle wax to last? Some barrels of beer handy? Ok then, let's proceed.

Rise of the Kraken - Deck Building

May 10 2013 05:10 PM | JCWamma in Game of Thrones

This week on Rise of the Kraken we're going to be looking at a more general subject of deck-building and card ratios, a subject that is important to learn and difficult to master. This is a weighty subject for any deck from any house, but a particularly difficult one for a Greyjoy player to tackle. Read on to learn more.

All Things Shagga - Small Council

May 08 2013 05:00 PM | Kennon in Game of Thrones

Once again All Things Shagga returns with a deck to wow your friends. A few months ago, we worked our way through the current chapter pack cycles and picked out the top 5 Shagga cards for each cycle. This week, we take a look at one of the great engine cards that were picked out from the King’s Landing cycle and look at how we might use it.

First Tilt - Budget Deckbuilds - Lannister Hype...

May 07 2013 03:20 PM | doulos2k in Game of Thrones

Welcome back to another edition of First Tilt! This week we embark on a new series (yay!) We're calling this the Budget Deckbuilds series. What we're going to do for the next few months is explore specific archetypes from each House and show you how to build a somewhat competitive deck with the least number of CPs possible. The goal will be to allow you, the new player, to try out some of the most common archetypes for each House without spending a lot of cash in the process. This week we have Lannister Hyperkneel from WWDrakey.

Forging the Chain - Jaime Style Pt. 1 - Efficiency

May 06 2013 06:20 AM | TinyGrimes in Game of Thrones

It has been noted lately that there is a dearth of Jaime related AGOT articles. Since I'm about as Jaime as they come I thought I would write a short series of articles from the perspective of the Jaime player. This week the focus is on efficiency. While in my own head this term and its application to AGOT is quite clear, I have recently realized this is simply not the case for many, especially newer players. My moment of realization occurred most emphatically when an up and coming player asked how to build a good Greyjoy deck. I said well that's pretty simple, throw in a pile of saves, cancels, and efficient characters. She followed up with "what makes an efficient character" and that question is the impetus for this article.

Quill & Tankard Regulars - Issue 23

May 03 2013 03:30 PM | CardGameDB in Game of Thrones

So, there you have it. The doors of the Quill & Tankard are opening up again for it’s usually seedy crowd of patrons, from peddlers of dodgy merchandise to ink-smudged bleary-eyed apprentices and... Archmaesters already deep in their cups at this time of day.

We’ve come back reinforced with a new member for our writing team in James “JCWamma” Waumsley, also now known as “The Whipping Boy”. Whether to congratulate, or commiserate... well, that’s for all of you to judge.

While we were away, it looks like some ships from Meereen, Lys and other exotic places, arrived at the Oldtown harbour, so it might be prudent to go check what dodgy merchandise they have brought with them

Beheading Ned - Blurring the Lines

May 02 2013 02:30 PM | OKTarg in Game of Thrones

Thank you all for indulging me on these Beheading Ned articles. I came into the game as a Ned, and I'm still proud to have more than my fair share. However, the time has come for me to migrate towards a more Jaime series in Fire and Blood, so this will be my last article. So in my final Beheading Ned article we are blurring the lines between the 3 playstyles. User PulseGlazer has submitted a deck very Shagga in style that revolves around Dorne as your House of Dreams location. The idea here is to use Dorne to reduce your Ladies and flood the board and drop Power of Blood.

Ours is the Fury - Maestering the Storm, Part 1

Apr 29 2013 05:30 AM | WWDrakey in Game of Thrones

Some long months ago I promised to move onto discussing running Maesters out of Baratheon. That was before the hurricane labelled as "FAQ 4.0" hit the meta, and especially Maesters, by storm. However, as Tourney results have recently shown (from Stark and Targaryen Maesters winning large Tourneys, to Baratheon and Greyjoy also making Top 4's) the folk of the Citadel are extremely hard to put down. While they might not be one step ahead of everybody else anymore, they are definitely still in the running. Knowledge always finds a way to spread.

Rise of the Kraken - Setting Sail

Apr 26 2013 05:05 AM | tibs3688 in Game of Thrones

Good evening fellow ironmen and marauders. As you might have seen in the last issue of Rise of the Kraken, we have lost one of the ironborn. Gangle has moved on from the lands of Westeros and on to other things; he will be missed. The Drowned God has shown me that I am to set sail from Pyke and spread the word of Greyjoy in his place. This is my first time writing a column here on CGDB, so bear with me :).

All Things Shagga - Pyre for Lannisters

Apr 24 2013 02:30 PM | Kennon in Game of Thrones

This week, All Things Shagga takes a turn back the house that started it all, the one that I first picked up a decade ago- House Lannister! Our triumphant return to the glorious golden lions is due to a nugget of inspiration from our very own Jedi Lanni, (sometimes known as Joe). We were playing some Thrones this weekend, and I saw him doing one of my very favorite things- splashing a cool out of house card into Lannister. In this case, he was using Pyre of the False Gods with Val as his Restricted card. Now, his event suite consisted of things like A House Divided and Insidious Ways which are great events, but a bolt of lightning struck, and I think we can do it just a smidge better.
