New players often ask me for tips on how to build a Game of Thrones decks. There are, of course, many perspectives on the most important aspects of deck building. Frequent online advice address amount and type of card advantage, removal, and number of characters for a given deck archetype. More specific or advanced advice may guide players to consider metagame trends. However, one of the most challenging aspects of deck building for new players, and an aspect that continues to perplex many players as they gain experience, is crafting a deck’s overall cost curve.

I have read a lot of reviews and tried to follow the "metagame" for A Game of Thrones Second Edition (2.0)—that is, to the extent there is a competitive metagame for a game that has not yet been fully released. I am finding that I disagree with many of the reviews posted online and discussed in podcasts, and I thought I would share a somewhat different perspective. In my view, ratings for many second edition cards, in particular, should be different from what I have experienced and what I would expect to see as the competitive environment takes shape over the next six months.

This article provides a deck list for the 2012 Red Saturday joust winner. At the event, which is a Black Friday tradition, 11 players attended from five different U.S. states, including top players from Washington DC, New York and Florida. The winning deck list is a Targaryen Maesters build that achieved a record of 7-0 (undefeated throughout the event) against Stark Winter, Stark House of Dreams (Bear Island), Greyjoy Winter, Targ House of Dreams (Dragonpit), Martell House of Dreams (The Scourge), and Power Behind the Throne.
